Marketing

All books should have a marketing plan if you want the book available for purchase. These are the main elements of your marketing plan:

The competition
Before you start the book, or if it’s completed, you should know what the book is competing against in the marketplace.

This will help you define what your book’s unique selling point is, who to sell the book to, what the style should be, and what topics it should cover.

For eg, if you wanted to write a book to help people plan their financial future, you should look at Noel Whittaker’s and other books to know what new things you need to do to make your book unique. Otherwise, why would people be interested?

Define your market
Who will be interested in reading it, in buying it? Think laterally and widely.

If you’re writing for older professionals, the style and tone of the book will be different from if you’re writing a funny book aimed at the youth market…or maybe you’re writing an academic style text book but you want people with lower levels of education to buy it…this will affect the language you use, the illustrations, and how you market the book.

What topics should/does it cover…?
Outline what the book should be or is about. Maybe the potential buyers are interested in a few topics but not the whole book…if the book is about how to run raise money for sporting organisations, marketing and PR people may also be interested, as would be athletes, and amateur and professional clubs.
