ebook pricing

The European Commission and the US Department of Justice has cases against the major book publishers for colluding with Apple to set prices for ebooks. Penguin and MacMillan are fight the case while the others have settled. Apple is also fighting the case. The case against Apple looks unlikely to succeed.

The background to this is difference between the wholesale model and agency model. The publishers have themselves very much to blame here as they gave Amazon which is a retailer wholesale prices. This meant that Amazon could significantly reduce ebooks prices to consumers. Amazon set the retail price for most novels at US$9.99. This is significantly less than the paperback price. As the publishers allowed this, Amazon quickly gained virtually monopoly status with 90% of the market.

In Australia Amazon is estimated at 75% of the market for ebooks. Google has now stated that they will cancel their current distribution model in 2013 that allows Dymocks and Booktopia to use the Google database for ebooks.

So where will this all leads us. You the consumer will decide. But we need to have a level competitive playing field. Prices need to be sustainable for all stakeholders.

If you had the choice of an ebook for $15 and a book for $20 - what would you choose?

To Hell and Back is the story of some of the other Australian airmen who flew with Bomber Command. These stories have been verified by conversations with the men or their relatives and in some cases historical records.

Synopsis

A story of contract law, natural disaster, property boom & bust and planning policies told through the microcosm of a luxury inner-city apartment development, ”Tennyson Breach” is so named because of the breached banks of the Brisbane River, breached contracts of apartment purchases and ultimately the breached property value dreams of buyers.

Tennyson Breach charts the Tennyson Reach apartment development from its gestation in 2005 to the floods of 2011 and subsequent partial acquisition by the Brisbane City Council. Amongst other things, Tennyson Breach analyses how the Global Financial Crisis and the 2011 floods provided a stern reality check for valuations of luxury apartments.

A must-read for property and litigation lawyers, investors and those interested in the turbulent recent history of real property in Brisbane.

To purchase Tennyson Breach

Tennyson Breach may be purchased at the launch, at Dymocks Indooroopilly Shoppingtown or online through the publisher Boolarong Press: http://www.boolarongpress.com.au/content/bookstore/bookDetails.asp?bookid=609

ebooks in Australia

ebooks in Australia for the large publishers have reached 10% but it is not across the board. It seems the printed version stilumates the sales of the best sellers. Those printed books that sell smaller quanties don't achieve the 10% for ebooks.

So the same principle applies. The author has to be well known or received significant publicity to achieve the sales.

Amazon is by far the largest share of approximately 70-75% with Kobo next.

Boolarong is now keeping Marie Mahood's books in stock. "Icing on the Damper" is back in stock now and the others will follow. This book is one of the best I've read on outback life.
